I am looking at this tomorrow for my son. My wife wants him to have a safe reliable car.
He wants something fun and manual. This seems like a reasonable compromise, especially if I can talk the guy down a little.

Seems like a good purchase. Given the year, I’d try and get him to bump it down to $13,0 00 or so.
Also maybe consider a Fiesta ST? Should be able to get a newer one at a similar price.

More important is to make sure the son doesn’t turn the blue one into the yellow one......

Have you thought about a buy back diesel golf with a stick?

I would get another. A few weeks ago, I debated picking up a hail damaged one for cheap. The hail wouldn’t have bugged me, I would’ve just had fun driving it.
I’ve often wanted to redo 2015, keep the FoST, and sell the Miata for an older project truck. The Tacoma and Cougar were ok, at least.
Good to see you back.

Much better solution, still fun but won’t get you into trouble. Altho teenage boys with make trouble with 90hp if they want to

When the ex wife was looking for a reliable vehicle my advice was buy as much 1) Toyota, 2) Honda, or 3) Hyundai as in your price range. I'd say for fun manuals, 86 family, civic (or older accord) or maybe a veloster turbo? No ford fan here. Id say GM before ford but they dont have anything entry level fun I can think of...

Given that it’s in Lemoore, guessing most of those are highway miles....could be a nice deal!

Can confirm - I’m 18 and I once did 60 in a 25 driving a 67 horsepower VW bus with a 3 speed automatic. Really not proud of that.
But yeah, a TDI Golf is a great idea. I have a DSG-equipped MK6 Sportwagen and it’s just powerful enough to be fun without feeling like it always wants to go faster.

Insurance will be MENTAL with a young driver. Volvo 240 is about as sporty as you want to get...

I would. Manual, so no phone or other fuckery while on the road. High safety rating. Great handling car for a modest to good driver. And plenty of room in the back and hatch.

Have you thought about a small pickup? I had one all through college, and the utility helped me out a lot. Ten years later, back in school, and am glad to have a pickup again. They also break a lot less and are easy to fix when they do.
When I think reliability, modern turbocharged DI engines don’t come to mind (this coming from a guy with a relatively trouble free 130k mile turbo BMW)

I’ll give you a good deal on a tdi beetle with a 5 speed that can’t be registered in many CA counties
But seriously, that could be a cool car for a teen. Much cooler than the ford hatchback I had in high school. You know what they say, don't think about it, be about it. Lol

That’s a lot money to drop on a first car, man. Unless i’m mistaken about which of the kids this is for.

My dad specifically made me get an automatic, 4 cylinder Camry as a first car because he knew I’d get into trouble. Sure enough within the first 6 months I had my license I’d been in 2 ditches, hit one brick wall, and gotten 3 tickets, 2 speeding one for rolling a stop sign.
Most do these were caused by trying to show off my MAD SKILZ YO. The others were from just trying to get some where 30 seconds faster

Good thing you weren’t my kid, because after the second time that car would have been off to the junkyard and your license would have been put in the shredder.

I sat in one of these at a car show once and was blown away by how little visibility there was. It was tiny feeling and way more of a cockpit than I could have ever driven in. Get your son something slower and with better sight lines. Maybe a Golf or something similar?

My parents only ever knewn about the tickets. After the first two I lost my driving privileges. Thankfully they couldn’t take the car I’d paid for it by then.
They also booted me off their insurance. That hurt. My insurance went from 70/ month to 130! That’s when I learned the real cost of a ticket.
